Instruments like the violin, viola, cello and double bass that utilize a bow are called bowed stringed instruments. Towards the latter part of the Middle Ages, the Arabian rabab and the rebec were played extensively in France and Spain. They are considered the violin's forefathers in the 15th Century. A bowed stringed instrument called a fiddle showed up in Europe. The Arabian rabab's influence spread to China, developing into the Chinese Erhu and morin Khur. Erhu and violin are, therefore, relatives!
