Justus Johann Friedrich Dotzauer (1783-1860) was a famous cellist who played in the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and the orchestra of the Dresden Staatskappelle. He was part of the premieres of Wagner's operas Rienzi and The Flying Dutchman. Dotzauer's Violoncellschule (Cello School) and 113 Exercises are foundational pieces of educational cello literature. Carl Flesch, a Hungarian violinist, was a celebrated soloist, chamber music performer, and teacher. He taught many famous performers and authored instructional books, and his Scale System for the violin is still in use. He owned the Brancaccio Stradivarius but sold it in 1928. Flesch lived in London during the 1930s and was later arrested by the Gestapo. He died in Switzerland in 1944.
0Louis Kievman was a multi-talented performer, writer, lecturer, and teacher. He enrolled in the Institute of Musical Art at 16 and studied under Franz Kneisel and Sascha Jacobsen. Kievman played with the Musical Arts Quartet and Stuyvesant String Quartet and was a founding member of the NBC Symphony under Arturo Toscanini. He taught master classes and was a faculty member at institutions such as the California Institute of the Arts and the University of California at Long Beach.
Emil Kreuz was a German musician born in Elberfeld in 1867. He played both the violin and viola and was also a composer, conductor, and teacher. In just ten years, Kreuz created a vast repertoire of music suitable for violists of any level. His pedagogical works were adopted by the RCM and Royal Academy of Music, and his music was suggested to violists for decades. Among the study books he recommended, Kreuz’s “Select Studies” in five books stands out as a fresh source of material.
