    7/8 Amati Mangenot Cello 1932

The 7/8 Amati-Mangenot Cello, Bordeaux 1932, is a distinctive early 20th-century French instrument bearing a label inscribed “Fait par Amati-Mangenot, Élève de Emile Laurent, à Bordeaux l’an 1932.” Its slightly reduced 7/8 size offers greater comfort and ease of handling than a standard full-size cello while retaining the presence and character expected of a traditional instrument.
Paul Amati Mangenot (1901–1966) was born in Mirecourt, France, on 12 January 1901, into an established family of violin makers. He initially trained under his father, Paul Alexandre Mangenot, before furthering his craft with the Laurent family of luthiers. After working independently in Clermont-Ferrand, he moved to Bordeaux and took over Émile Laurent’s workshop in 1925. Mangenot became known for finely crafted violins, violas, and cellos influenced by classical Cremonese models. He remained associated with Bordeaux until his death there on 11 November 1966.
With its 1932 Bordeaux label, French provenance, compact dimensions, and connection to an accomplished Mirecourt-trained maker, this cello offers an appealing combination of history, craftsmanship, and practicality for players and collectors seeking a mature French instrument.
