We have here the Georg Tiefenbrunner 15.3" Viola made in Mittenwald, Germany about 1890. Tiefenbrunner remained true to his heritage in selecting the tone woods, specifically the medium-grained spruce for the top and closely flamed maple for the one-part back are both premium woods from the Karwendel Mountains.

This viola is sold on consignment. It was purchased and used by a member of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra as a second viola or backup viola. It was purchased in Northern Europe for twice the advertised price. Still, the $3300 is further negotiable. The country of origin is unknown. The label points to a maker who worked 100 years ago, but the viola is not so old.
The sound quality is fine.
