This handcrafted 17-inch viola was made by Australian luthier Dietrich Eberhard Funke, who operated his workshop in Nambour, Queensland. The original label identifies his business as "Violins – Making & Repairs" and confirms his workshop address at 45 Isabella Avenue, Nambour QLD 4560. According to the instrument's provenance, Funke was a self-taught violin maker who worked extensively with Australian timbers, creating instruments valued for their individuality and craftsmanship. This viola is a fine example of his work, reflecting the dedication of an independent maker committed to both building and restoring stringed instruments.

Measuring 17 inches, this viola offers a rich, deep, and resonant tonal character, making it particularly well suited to players seeking a powerful lower register and a warm, full-bodied sound. Constructed from carefully selected Australian tonewoods, it possesses a distinctive voice that sets it apart from more conventional European-made instruments. As the work of a regional Australian maker, this viola represents a unique piece of Australia's violin-making heritage and is an appealing instrument for musicians, collectors, and enthusiasts who appreciate handcrafted instruments with character and provenance.
