With its broad melodic lines and deeply expressive cello writing, Max Bruch’s Kol Nidrei, Op. 47 has become one of the most enduring works of the Romantic cello repertoire. Subtitled “Adagio on Two Hebrew Melodies,” the work was originally written for cello and orchestra and draws its opening theme from the traditional Kol Nidre melody associated with Yom Kippur. The cello assumes an almost vocal, cantorial quality throughout the opening section before the music develops into Bruch’s characteristically warm Romantic lyricism. This Carl Fischer edition is arranged for cello and piano and edited by Alexander Lehmann, with bowings and fingerings included.
