Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778–1837) was an Austrian composer and virtuoso pianist whose music helped bridge the Classical and early Romantic periods. A child prodigy who studied with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and later worked closely with Joseph Haydn, Hummel became one of Europe’s most celebrated pianists and composers of his time. His works are admired for their elegant melodies, brilliant technical writing, and refined Classical style, and include concertos, chamber music, piano works, sacred compositions, and orchestral pieces. His music influenced later Romantic composers, particularly in the development of virtuoso piano writing.
