Joseph Joachim composed Hebrew Melodies, Op. 9, between 1854 and 1855, about 40 years after the poems that inspired them were published and in collaboration with Isaac Nathan, Lord Byron published a set of 29 songs titled Hebrew Melodies in 1815. These songs, better known as poems today, had mainly unheard-of music and were challenging to obtain. "She Walks in Beauty," one of the most famous poems in the collection, is among Byron's most famous works. Joachim, who was Jewish like Nathan, used similar liturgical sources when composing this work but limited himself to three movements. Breitkopf & Härtel published this edition for viola and piano.
