Elgar, Chanson de Nuit and Chanson de Matin for Violin and Piano (Peters)
Chanson de Nuit, Op. 15, No. 1, was composed by Edward Elgar for violin and piano, and was later orchestrated by the composer. It was first published in 1897, however it is thought to have been written in 1889 or 1890.
Chanson de Nuit has been compared with and said to be a finer work than its more popular "companion" piece, Chanson de Matin, Op. 15, No. 2.
Although Chanson de Matin has critically been described as less profound, it has a fresh melodic appeal that has made it more popular.
Elgar composed La Capricieuse Morceau de Genre for violin and piano when he was 34. The piece was once popular and was even performed by Heifetz.
