The Winding River is a reflective piece with a lovely, lilting feeling. This piece allows students to work on their sound, through good bow control, as well as their vibrato. Encourage the students to sustain the tone through the long notes to keep the sound full and energetic. There is a lighter A Major section in the middle with the violas and cellos featured before the E minor melody returns. Be sure to keep the tempo flowing throughout to portray the river flowing along. A nice, contrasting piece for concerts and competitions.
