Born in Erlangen, a city in the Middle Franconian region of Bavaria, Germany, in 1976, Thomas Stöhr demonstrated a fascination and affinity for the craft of luthiery from an early age. After completing his vocational baccalaureate diploma in 1995, Stöhr embarked on a three-year apprenticeship under the mentorship of Günter Lobe, a renowned Master Luthier.

Stepping into the Field

Upon completion of his apprenticeship in 1998, Stöhr faced the examining board of the Trade Corporation of Middle Franconia for his final examination. His craftsmanship was so remarkable that he was declared the “Best Journeyman” by the examining board.

Early Accolades

Thomas Stöhr's craftsmanship and dedication did not go unnoticed. In 1998 and 1999, he participated in the Youth Craftsmanship Competition, where he won numerous awards. These accolades included the Middle Franconian Chamber'S of Luthery Award, the Bavarian Chamber of Luthier’s Award, and the German Youth Craftsmanship.

Master Luthier

In 2001, Stöhr's hard work and dedication bore fruit when he passed his Master’s examination with distinction, earning the title of Best Luthier. The same year, the Bavarian State Government honored him with the Master’s Prize, further cementing his reputation as a master craftsman.

Recognition and Competitions

In 2004, his exceptional skill was recognized once again when he won the German Musical Instrument Award in the cello category. Stöhr's participation in various international luthiery competitions further showcased his talent. In 2005, he took part in the 5th International Luthiery Competition in Mittenwald, where he was declared the second-best German cello maker. The following year, he participated in the 11th International Luthiery Competition in Cremona, ranking fourth out of 63 cellos in the tonal rating.

Stöhr's influence and expertise extend beyond Germany. In 2007, he became a member of the Swiss Luthiers’ and Bowmakers’ Association, and the following year, he joined the Violin Society of America, further expanding his global network.
