Cassado, Toccata for Cello and Piano (Universal)

Brilliant and energetic, Toccata is a virtuoso work for cello and piano closely associated with Spanish cellist-composer Gaspar Cassadó. The piece was originally published in 1925 by Universal Edition under the name of Girolamo Frescobaldi, with Cassadó presented as the arranger. Modern scholarship, however, generally identifies it as Cassadó’s own composition written in a deliberately Baroque-inspired style rather than an authentic Frescobaldi work. Its rapid passagework, rhythmic drive and brilliant cello writing make it an effective concert showpiece for advanced players. The Universal Edition publication is catalogue UE 8282 and is scored for cello with piano accompaniment.
