MacMillan, Cello Sonata No. 2 (Boosey and Hawkes)

The MacMillan Cello Sonata No. 2 (Boosey & Hawkes) is a contemporary work by Scottish composer Sir James MacMillan (born 1959). Written for cello and piano, the sonata reflects MacMillan’s distinctive musical language, combining expressive lyricism with dramatic contrasts, rhythmic intensity, and demanding instrumental writing. The close interaction between cello and piano creates a substantial chamber work that challenges both performers in areas of ensemble coordination, tonal control, articulation, rhythm, and interpretation. Published by Boosey & Hawkes, Cello Sonata No. 2 offers advanced cellists significant contemporary repertoire for professional study, recital, and concert performance.
