Sonata in A major by Cesar Franck
Sonata No 1 by Gabriel Faure
Sonata No 1 for violin and piano marked Faure's debut in chamber music. It is an innovative work of great elegance and has complexity without sacrificing clarity. It was completed in 1876, when Faure was around 31 years of age. He dedicated this sonata to the violinist Paul Viardot who played the sonata with Faure himself at its premier.
Sonata in A major was written by Franck in 1886 as a wedding gift for the violinist Eugene Ysaye. Ysaye kept this composition in his repertoire for 40 years which indicates his regard for Franck's sonata. The work combines Franck's love of Classical traditions with a rich harmonic language and appealing melodies.
