Georg Tiefenbrunner 15.3" Viola Mittenwald, Germany c 1890
Georg Tiefenbrunner was a violin maker and luthier who worked in Bavaria making beautiful instruments in the late 1800s. His impressive artisanal abilities are clearly evident in the delicate purfling which extends far into the corners and runs close along the edges of the instrument; they can also be seen in the careful carving of the expressive scroll. A native of the Mittenwald region, Tiefenbrunner remained true to his heritage in selecting the tone woods, specifically the medium-grained spruce for the top and closely flamed maple for the one-part back are both premium woods from the Karwendel Mountains.

This unique instrument is known for producing a polyphonic sound used in traditional dances and music, and it is often ornately decorated with carvings and inlay.
