Sharp, 'Til the Work is Done For String Orchestra
"Til the Work is Done" was first published in 2000 as a string ensemble piece accompanied by piano. Since then, it has been a favorite at Music House String Publications, as it encourages students to express themselves through their instruments, much like a choir does. The melody is also featured in "Encore on Strings—Music Maestros, Book 2."
The string ensemble setting is flexible, allowing for varying levels of musical independence. This spiritual-style song can be performed twice: first as a full unison melody with piano accompaniment and a double bass harmony line, and then in its part setting. Each rendition begins with a four-bar piano introduction, which can also sound great when played by a string quartet.
In the part setting, the melody is presented by Violin 2, with optional parts for Viola 2 and Violoncello 2, making this a suitable choice for younger or less experienced players. The Violin 1 obligato line complements the melody, enriched by Violoncello 1 (and optionally Viola 1), all supported by the double bass harmony line. Overall, it is a flexible and satisfying tonal score.
