A Violin Labelled and Signed (?) by Collin-Mezin in 1923 France

Charles Jean Baptiste Collin-Mezin (1841 – 1923) is a French violin maker who started at a young age as an apprentice under the tutelage of his father, Claud-Nicolas Collin. His father is a violin maker who joined Nicolas Vuillaume (Sainte Cécile) and Nicolas François Vuillaume of Brussels which explains why his signature was found in their violins.

At the age of 17, Charles Jean Baptiste left his father to go to Paris. Three years later he went back to Mirecourt and just like his father, he joined Nicolas François Vuillaume in Brussels. In 1867 he finally started his own workshop at the 14 and 18 rue du Faubourg Poissonnière, occupying the former address of Rambault and remained there until 1876.
