This violin is Labeled Johann Baptist Schweitzer 1844 Repaired by M Nebel New York c 1895. Johann Baptist Schweitzer was considered one of the finest violin makers in Vienna. He adopted a more classical approach to classical models, emulating Amati and Stradivari patterns with some authenticity. M. Nebel & Bros was established by the Nebel Brothers Martin, and Andrew Nebel who specialized in making and restoring violins.

Johann Baptist Schweitzer (1790 – 1865) is considered one of the finest violin makers in Vienna. He was under the tutelage of Franz Geissenhof in Vienna and started violin making in the year 1912. He moved to Budapest in 1825 teaching various violin makers such as Gabriel Lemböck. Adopting a more classical approach to classical models, he emulated Amati and Stradivari patterns with some authenticity. Schweitzer greatly influenced the next generation of makers in Austria, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia. He remained in Budapest for the rest of his life.
