Cello Saddle
The Cello Saddle is a machined component to be installed on the edge of the cello beneath the tailpiece's tailgut/loop. Its primary function is to prevent the tailgut/loop from cutting into the top/soundboard of the cello.
It's essential to note that the Cello tailpiece saddle is pre-shaped and semi-fitted. However, like most instrument replacement parts, the saddle must be tailored to fit, and it's not intended to be installed by the customer. Therefore, it's crucial to have a trained luthier install it for you.
The cello saddle is a small rectangular block made of ebony. It is located at the end of the cello, just in front of the endpin. Its primary function is to distribute the force created by string tension away from the centre of the cello and towards the endpin. This helps to relieve the pressure exerted on the cello's body. Additionally, it supports the tailgut, which is attached to the bottom of the cello.
