Jacob Dont was an Austrian violinist (March 2, 1815 to November 17, 1888) who was known for his exceptional talent as a teacher and composer. He studied under the guidance of Josef Bohm and Georg Hellmesberger. At the young age of sixteen, he became a member of the Hofburgtheater orchestra, and later on, in 1824, he joined the Vienna Hofkapell as well. Despite his success as a soloist, he chose not to pursue a career as one and became a professor at the Padagogisches Institut in Vienna. He also taught at the Wiener Konservatorium but eventually had to leave the position due to the prohibition of using his compositions for teaching. Most of his works consist of innovative teaching material, and he is most famous for his 24 Etudes and Caprices Gradus ad Parnassus Op. 35, considered some of the most critical technical studies for the violin. Some of his students include Leopold Auer.
