    From the editor Theodore Spiering "Simultaneously with the music ultra-moderism of our day and as if to recall us to a more moderate and more wholesome contemplation and enjoyment of our art, there sprang up a few years ago a great renaissance movement that has been the means of bringing to renewed attantion a vast number of compositions belonging to the eiteenth and early ninteenth centuries, primarily works by Italian violinists of that period, and which about in melodies as fresh and ingratiating today as when they were written.

    Of these early Italian composers for our instrument, none knew how to sing more convincingly than Pietro Nardini.

    The spirit which pervades the first and main movement of this sonata is of extremely varying mood. The Larghetto, taken from another work of the composer, is an incantation of pure loveliness.

    The Rondo, decidedly pastoral in nature, is full of life and animation, and effective, as is the entire Sonata, if the right spirit is caught.

    The harmonic setting and technical freedom from a violinistic standpoint are remarkable for a work of this period."
