Grasshopper Chomp for String Orchestra by Anne Svendsen
Here’s another great teaching piece from Svendsen. The off-the-string (optional) bowing can represent the chomping of the grasshopper. Set in D major It’s an easy tune that offers flexible performance options by dividing out the players into melody players and harmony players. In this manner it could be done in a number of ways, from all low strings to a mixture of everyone.
Mozart composed over 30 violin sonatas during his lifetime. Among these works, only one sonata stands out for being entirely in a minor key. This particular sonata is known for its dark, brooding and energetic nature. It also features spiccato and martele articulations, which were crucial to the Classical style of music. This piece is appropriate for Grade 4 string orchestras.
“The Grand Royale” by Michael Patterson is a stunning modern classical string ensemble composition created in 2009. It showcases the intricate interplay between the violin I, II, and III, viola, cello, and double bass, and is moderately difficult, making it a great choice for grades 4-6 students. The five-minute runtime mesmerizes and captivates, exemplifying the beauty and depth of classical music. Michael is a highly skilled Brisbane-based musician, performer, conductor, teacher, and composer who has gained diverse musical experiences throughout his career.
