Jack in the Box By Loreta Fin This piece is designed to teach bow division and planning of bow speeds. Whole bows should be used in the soft opening section, followed by faster middle-half bow speed in the Jack-in-the-box "surprise". The last eighth note can be lifted and carefully replaced in the half note rest in measires 3 and 4 and similar places thoughout the piece. Students should be sure to land safely on the string before "taking off" again each time. Keep a nice firm left hand in pizzicato, to allow the tone to ring, and check that the position of the plucking finger is over the fingerboard, not the f-holes.
