Lonestar (Grade 2.5) for String Orchestra by Keith Sharp
This piece draws inspiration from the wild west of America and the rhythmic complexity of contemporary composers in the US. It has a touch of cowboy feel, with exciting and idiomatic lines. The outer sections of the piece lend themselves well to creating a dynamic ensemble, while the middle section has a pleasing melody in a lilting compound rhythm. The piece also presents several opportunities for bowing techniques and position work, making it useful for pedagogical purposes.
Keith Sharp earned his Bachelor of Music degree in 1984 and later took the position of string educator in the Gap region of Brisbane, Australia. He continues to teach there to this day. In 1995, Keith completed a postgraduate diploma in education. During his teaching career, he has successfully developed and led award-winning string programs and ensembles while pursuing his passion for composition. Keith's stunningly crafted and imaginative works have become increasingly popular throughout Australia, and more recently, teachers in the United States, Great Britain, and Germany have discovered them. Keith remains an active clinician, guest conductor, and guest lecturer.
