Hoffmeister, Concerto in D for Viola (Kunzelmann)
Franz Anton Hoffmeister's Viola Concerto in D Major was written before 1799 and has become one of the standard repertoires of viola concertos. This is due to the emergence of viola virtuosos at the beginning of the twentieth century and the rarity of virtuosic viola concertos with stylistic forms from the Classical period. This piece has been included in several major orchestra auditions and competitions. Violists often require hands-on experience with the Classical repertoire, and this document provides them with ways to perform this piece and other pieces from the same period.
The Viola Concerto in D Major by Hoffmeister has been published by G. Henle Verlag, Kunzelmann, Peters, Kalmus, International Music Company (New York), H. L. Grahl, and Max Eschig. Kunzelmann has the full score and piano reduction, while the others have piano reductions. Seven different cadenzas have been published, five of which were written by Franz Beyer, Herbert Blendinger, Maurice Vieux, Robert D. Levin, and Paul Doktor. Each of these cadenzas poses unique technical challenges.
