Were there any leg bands, or markings stamped on the wing? They look like they belong to a pigeon fancier, rather than being feral Rock Doves.
    Thanks for looking after it.

Replied by: Dietrich Lasa On 12/12/2023 I could not detect any leg bands or stamps but I was not looking for them either (it would have been quite obvious though)

Thank you for looking after the poor bird. Maybe the other birds were saying thank you as well. We are all living creatures and need to care for each other. We need more caring people in the world. Thank you.

Replied by: Dietrich Lasa On 11/12/2023 Thank you, Deb, for your comment. Caring happens spontaneously, naturally. The birds care because that's their nature. I agree that we can see a lot of things going on that suggest that caring is not everyone's nature.

Replied by: Dietrich Lasa On 11/12/2023 It's their nature, and when I assisted, that was also natural.

Thank you for sharing your story, must have been quite the shock finding the injured bird. It's impressive how complex their social structure is and how much more connected they are than perhaps we are aware of. That big white one with the fancier tail feathers is beautiful.

Replied by: Dietrich Lasa On 11/12/2023 Yes, I also noticed the big white one - such a beautiful bird and spirit.

Thank you for posting that - a very moving story. Certainly, that was a "bird funeral" - it's often been observed in the scientific community. Last year, I saw a similar thing - a crow was sadly electrocuted on a power line across the road from my home. Within moments, the area was swarming with fellow crows, circling and clearly distressed. They gathered in a great number, plaintively crowing for nearly an hour. It was a memorable event, and certainly affirmed the universality of emotion we can commonly see throughout the animal kingdom, if we have the presence of mind to observe closely. Oh - and the Piazolla was a lovely choice, suitably melancholy...

Replied by: Dietrich Lasa On 10/12/2023 Thank you, Jess, for sharing your Crow funeral. For me, this was a new insight into this animal kingdom, but several comments show that others have experienced this as well, including yourself.

Every morning our premises are graced by 3 guinea fowl,4 kookaburras,2 butcher birds and 2 ibises, all demanding food, which we generously give them, they like pet mince. The kookaburras eat from our hands. The guinea fowl are as blind as bats, only peck morsels up from the ground, and the butcher birds only catch the mince if it is thrown high into the air.Picky little so-and-sos,but we love them.
P.S.Got any cheap entry level 4/4 cellos, also any hopelessly useless 4/4 violins, which I need one of to hang on the wall as an ornament?

Happy Xmas and a great new Year! Jed the Piano Man

Replied by: Dietrich Lasa On 10/12/2023 Thank you for sharing your bird stories! Regarding a cheap cello, we have a laminated 4/4 cello that will sell for $395. We will set it up on Tuesday if you feel that is for you. Regarding a violin to hang on the wall, we can look for one when you get your cello.

  • Bird Funerals
    By: George On 10/12/2023

    Thanks for posting, Dietrich.
This reminded me of a bird funeral I witnessed in the river near where I live.
First I noticed an upside-down dead seagull floating on the outgoing tide toward the river mouth and ocean. Following (right-side up:) were several seagulls, then other water birds from the area ... all in groups of their own kind and in a procession.
That was very moving and just goes to show that creatures other than humans have feelings and ways of dealing with them.

Replied by: Dietrich Lasa On 10/12/2023 It was new to me. It is interesting that you also witnessed this with the seagulls!
