Alfredo Piatti was an Italian cellist born in 1822. He studied under his father and great-uncle and succeeded the latter in the local theatre orchestra at the age of eight. Piatti played with all the great soloists of his time and taught at the Royal Academy of Music. He profoundly influenced cello history, particularly in England, playing in the old style without an end-pin. He died in 1901, but his cello method remains popular worldwide.
