Two Australian Sea Pictures for String Orchestra (Grade 1) by Stephen Chin
Australia's scenic beauty is truly unmatched, and Port Fairy and the Twelve Apostles are two of the most picturesque places that the country has to offer. Port Fairy is a charming village with a peaceful atmosphere, characterized by its blue stone cottages, rock walls, and fishing boats. The enchanting musical ensemble, The Gentle Boats at Port Fairy, delights all with its wistful melodies, tinged with an Irish flavour. On the other hand, Storm over the Twelve Apostles is a powerful musical work that vividly captures the awe-inspiring sight of Mother Nature's fury unleashed on the magnificent stone formations that majestically rise up from the ocean on the southern coast.
Stephen Chin, an Australian composer and teacher, is currently the Principal String Teacher at Brisbane Grammar School. He has composed numerous educational pieces as well as compositions for student string orchestras.
A musical arrangement for strings, percussion, and voice with four memorable Australian folk tunes that are easy to sing along to. The vocal part can be sung by a soloist or choir, and the lyrics are included. The piece can also be played as an instrumental work.
Carl Bohm (1844 - 1920) was a renowned composer and teacher for violinists. His famous pieces, "Moto Perpetuo" and "Galop," showcase double semiquavers and highlight the cellos in the latter. The work is shared around for everyone to shine.
An excellent piece to introduce Early Music to students. Most rhythms are simple, with some quavers in the first violin part. Improvised percussion parts can be added for authenticity.
This music piece is based on an old English hymn that depicts a journey to hope, titled To the Palace of Light. It has a solemn beginning, turbulent middle, and faster, jig-like ending. Elements of the hymn can be heard throughout, making it a great choice to end a concert or festival.
Feel the rush with this piece! The music's edgy rhythms and meter changes create a sense of urgency and desperation, like a frantic pursuit. A lyrical middle section offers a moment of respite before the thrilling journey resumes.
Grieg's music is rooted in Norwegian folk songs. The "Watchman's Song" has a ghostly section conveyed through tremolo. A melancholic waltz follows, evoking a troll's cave. The contrast of keys and playing styles can refine any ensemble.
