    Fernando’s Tango (Grade 2) for String Orchestra by Keith Sharp

    Fernando’s Tango is a great piece to study the dotted rhythm as it is featured throughout the score. The parts for the cello, double bass, violin, and violin 3/viola treble are fundamentally rhythmic and encourage strong beat stability within the ensemble. The 1st Violins have an attractive tango descant that is easy to play. The Violin 1 Alternative Extension is included for use with the 1st Violin section of more excellent technical prowess. This ensemble pack includes Unison Melody parts for Violin, Viola, and ‘Cello, which younger players can play together. The piano provides harmonic and rhythmic support in this instance. It is a highly flexible yet straightforward arrangement that can be tailored to suit various playing standards within the primary string ensemble. 

    Keith Sharp earned his Bachelor of Music degree in 1984, after which he began teaching string music in the Gap region of Brisbane, Australia, where he still teaches today. In 1995, Keith completed a postgraduate diploma in education. Throughout his teaching career, Keith has created excellent string programs and ensembles while pursuing his passion for composition. His imaginative and well-crafted works are very popular throughout Australia and have recently gained popularity among teachers in the United States, Great Britain, and Germany. Keith is also an active clinician, guest conductor, and guest lecturer.

    “The Spaniard” is a piece of WSSO’s commissioned music that premiered in 2018. It tells three parts of a heroic captain’s valiant exploits. The captain survives a shipwreck, is rescued by an Irish maiden he marries, and returns to his seafaring life. The piece has lyrical melodies and is enjoyed by audiences and middle/high school students.

    Keith Sharp has been teaching string music in Brisbane’s regional state schools since 1985. He holds a Bachelor of Music Degree and a Graduate Diploma in Further Education.
