Shanghai Hornpipe (Grade 2.5) for String Orchestra
This piece is a fun and catchy tune that combines Eastern harmonies and Western rhythms. It features fiddling, alternating time signatures, and pentatonic patterns, making it a definite crowd-pleaser. All parts take turns playing one of the main themes, while various bowing styles and textures provide a wide range of educational and musical experiences. First, violins have the option to play in ottava and third position. Additionally, the piece modifies the relative primary key, making it an excellent choice for students to play and enjoy.
Keith Sharp earned his Bachelor's degree in Music in 1984, after which he began teaching as a string educator in the Gap region of Brisbane, Australia. He still continues to teach there. In 1995, Keith completed a post-graduate diploma in education. Throughout his teaching career, Keith has created award-winning string programs and ensembles, all while pursuing his passion for composition. His beautifully crafted and imaginative works are very popular throughout Australia and have recently gained popularity in the United States, Great Britain, and Germany. Keith remains active as a clinician, guest conductor, and guest lecturer.
